Preparation for Gastroscopy

To ensure accurate results and a smooth procedure, please follow these guidelines:

1. Blood Tests: May be required before the procedure.
2. Medications: May be administered through a vein if needed.
3. Fasting: Avoid food or drink for at least 6 hours before the procedure to ensure a clear view of your digestive tract.
4. Transportation: Arrange for someone to accompany you home, as sedatives used during the procedure may leave you drowsy.

During the Procedure

• A local anesthetic spray or sedative will be administered for your comfort.
• You’ll lie on your side while the endoscope is gently guided through your mouth into your esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.
• The procedure is minimally uncomfortable, and many patients fall asleep during it.
• The endoscope does not interfere with breathing, ensuring a safe and smooth experience.

After the Procedure

• You will be monitored until the sedatives wear off.
• Some temporary symptoms, like a sore throat or bloating, may occur but usually resolve quickly.
• You can resume eating unless instructed otherwise.
• Test results may be shared on the same day, but some findings may take a few days.

Important: Avoid driving or operating machinery for the rest of the day due to the sedatives' lingering effects.
